WAKANUI SPORTS AND RACES

Handicappers: Messrs Lewis and Thomson (Hone Races), W. Anderson and J. Sturgeon (Athletic Sports). Judges : Messrs Leatham and Bonifant. Starter :Mr E. Thomas. Clerk of Scales : Mr G. Cole. Clerk of Course: Mr S. ■ Brown.

These sports and races came off yesterday in a paddock which had been kindly placed at the disposal of .the committee by Mr James Brown. There was a very good attendance, fully 1,000 persons putting in an appearance by about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The slight shower of rain that fell did not interfere with the pleasure of the day, and the.various events were run off with commendable promptitude, and elicited some competition. Mr Scott, of Bglin, was present, and during the day enlivened the hearts of Scotchmen with a varied selection of music on the bagpipes. Mrs Butler had publican’s booth on the ground, and we noticed also confectioner’s and refreshment booth under Mr Davidson’s management, all of which appeared to be doing a good business! The police force was represented by mounted Constable Neil, and his duties were not heavy owing to tho good behavior of ihe crowd.’ The ground' chosen for the sports was all that Could be desired. A straw stack in the middle of the paddock serving as a grand stand, and daring the day it was crowded with on-lookers. The oo umittee were assiduous in their duties, and deserve -commendation for the arrangements made by them for the various races, etc. We noticed Messrs E. Thomas, Co'e and Protheroe particularly, who were hard at work, and we have to acknowledge the: courtesy shown us by the Hon Secretary, Mr Arthur Cookson.
