II'HK PRESS ASSOCIATION;] Fatal Boating Accident. W f llington , To-day. A fatal boating accident occurred in the harbor late on Christmas night. Three young men named Harry Lee, James Wallard, and Thomas Williams, left Nghauranga in a boat at ten o’clock at night, bn a fishing excursion. When out about a mile one of the oarsmen missed a stroke, and this caused the boat to capsize. Williams clung to the overturned boat, but the others disappeared and were drowned. Williams’ cries were heard from the shore, and a Norwegian named Truman, hastily constructed a raft with some planks and went in search. He was successful in rescuing Williams, who was in a much exhausted condition. Both of the men drowned, were unmarried. The bodies have not been recovered. Christmas Pantomime. The largest audience ever seen in Wellington assembled at the Theatre Royal last night, to witness the Drury Lane pantomime “ Mother Goose,” under Messrs Stanfield and Hepburn’s management. The transformation scene exceeds anything that has been seen in this colonyThe Nelson Regatta. Nelson, To-day. The regatta was very successful. Iris won the yacht race. The Wellington crews won the s-mmr an 1 maiden inriggad fours. The Noiouu ore v won the senior outrigger race, and the Wellington crew maintained the lead, but on nearing the winning post got into lumpy water. The other events wero locally contested. Dunedin Amusements. Dunedin, To-day. “ Youth ” opened last night to one of the largest houses ever seen in the Princess Theatre. Hundreds were turned away. LlB6 was taken at the doors. The Kennedy’s had an enthusastic reception from a crowded house at the Garrlaea Hall. A Coming Racer. At the Cromwell races, Rivers recently purchased Don Jose, won both handicaps easily. Fatal Accident. At the inquest on the body of the boy Rutherford, a verdict of accidental death was returned: The picnic children had left the car, but the deceased, who had asked permission to continue on the journey, fell over the side of the oar. The Courts. The criminal calendar comprises twelve ca?e?, including one of manslaughter. Overcrowding. The Customs Department intend proceeding against several of yesterday’s excursion steamers for overcrowding;
