COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION.
At noon to-day Messrs E. G, Wright Lnd James Brown were nominated to fill the seat in the County Gouncd recently vacated by Mr H. T. Winter, Mr Brown was present and said that when he determined to contest the seat he had no idea that Mr Wright was likely to he a candidate. He considered his opponent by far the most suitable man, and it was with genuine satisfaction that he noticed his reply to the influential requisition which had been presented. It now only remained for him (Mr Brown) to congratulate the requisitionists upon having induced Mr Wright to seek election, and to hand his own retirement from the contest to the Returning Officer.
The Returning Officer having received Mr Brown’s resignation, he decla r ed Mr E. G. Wright duly elected for the Ashburton riding in the County Council. It was intimated that Mr Wright was prevented from being present by illness in his family.
