The Ashburton Guardian. Magna Est Veritas Et Prevalebit. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1883.
The Hon Mr Mitchelson arrived at Dunedin on V ednesday night. He received two small deputations yesterday, and visited the Government workshops, etc. The Government have granted LBOO for the reconstruction of one of the bridges in Leith Valley, in the Maori Hill suburb of Dunedin, destroyed by the recent flood. There is little hope of saving the Triumph now. She is almost on her beam ends, and the water is now in the second companment, and the vessel is breaking up along the keel. On Wednesday night Joseph a farmer in the Sandhills accidentally drowned in the Waimakariri when driving home from Addington saleyards. He loaves a wife and family. Mr John London states that the Parliament of Samoa have unanimously agreed to petition for annexation with New Zealand, and will forward the petition to the Premier and Parliament of New Zealand. At the meeting of the Auckland Cricket Association it was agreed to gu irantee LSO to the Canterbury Association on condition that the interprovincial match be played on the 28th, 29th, and 31st Dec., so as to be prior to the matches with the Wanderers. The bakers are evidently not going to have it all their own way, as it will be seen from a notification in another column that some enterprising people are about to start a bakery, and will soli 4lb loaves for sd. This it is to be hoped is the beginning of the end to the combination entered into to raise the price of bread. The New Zealand Bible, Tract and Book Society has now opened a branch in Ashburton at Saunders’ Building*, un-er the management of Mr J. R. McDonald. Those of our readers who wish to purchase handsome books, cards, etc., for Christmas presents, cannot d j batter than pay this establishment a visit, as Mr McDonald only stays for a few days longer. The master of the Old Men’s Home, being desirous of giving the inmates a treat during the Christmas holidays, would be glad to receive subscriptions, etc., from friends who would like to assist. It is to be hoped that this annual treat to the old men will be as successful as it has been in former years, and that our readers will again remember the inmates during the coming festive season. A meeting of the Longbeach District School Committee was held in the Main School on Monday, December 3rd. Present—Messrs Grigg (chairman), Croy, Donaldson, and Shearer. The master’s report on the Main School showed the same number on register as last month, while the Side School showed an increase of three boys. Ic was decided to hold the annual treat on New Year’s Day, and that the secretary be authorised to obtain toys for the children’s sports. A letter was read from the Board of Education, approving of the appointment of Mrs Harding as sewing mistress at the Side School, It was decided to hold the next meeting on Monday, 31st inst., and the meeting adjourned. 'J he weather was so bad last evening that it could not fail to have a baneful effect upon the attendance at the Orchestral Society’s concert, but the few people who ventured to brave the elements were rewarded by a musical treat. The items were nearly the same as on the previous night, and the audience made up for their want of numbers by the enthusiasm displayed. MrCorrick’ssolo on the violin was especially appreciated, and was, if anything, even better than that given on the prior occasion, and the other instrumentalists did their best, although it must have damped their ardor to have to appear before so few people. Mrs Oorrick, Miss Smart, and Mr Branson were the vocalists, and received hearty applause for their efforts. We hope that the Society will not relax in their efforts to provide good music for the Ashburton public, and that their next concert will be as successful from a financial point of view as the last has been artistically. Holloway’s Pills are strongly recommended to all persons who are much reduced in power and condition, whose stomachs are weak, and whose nerves are shattered. The beneficial effects of these Pills will be perceptible after a few days’ trial, though a more extended course may be required to re-establish perfect health. Holloway’s medicine acts on the organs of digestion, and induces complete regularity in the stomach, liver, pancreas, and kidneys. This treatment is both safe and cer Lain in result, and is thoroughly consistent with observation, experience, and common sense. The purification of the blood, the removal of all noxious matter from the secretions, and the excitement of gentle action in the bowels, are sources of the curative powers of Hollo* way’s Pills.—Advt.
Tasman, Johnny Faulkner, and Envious have been scratched for the Midsummer Handicap at the 0 J 0. Summer Meeting. At a monster meeting at the Hokitika Town Hall, on Wednesuay evening, resolutions strongly condemnatory of the Westland Education Board for refusing to proceed with the elections under the Westland Subdivision Bill were passed. It was resolved to ask Government at once to have a special auditor appointed to examine the accounts for the last three years. The liabilities of the Board are now stated at L 6 000, whereas on 31st Dece über last these were stated to be LI, 100. only. The Subdivision Act referred to subdivides Westland Board district into two districts—Westland and Greymouth, and divides the liabilities.
