ASHBURTON v. SELWYN. The team of cricketers which left here on Wednesday last for the purpose of playing with a Selwyn Eleven at Hororata had a very pleasant time of it, having been moat hospitably entertained. It was expected that the match would have lasted two days, but it was concluded at about six o’clock on Wednesday. Selwyn went first to the wickets, and sent in G. Wilson and J.;H. Anson to the bowling of Simpson and Andrews, Anson was soon dismissed, but Wilson made a considerable stand, and put together 34 before he succumbed. Reid, from whom great things were expected, failed to score, and the only others who tninago.l to get into double figures were Rollettand Bealy, with |
11 an !12 respectively. The innings closed for 89, a good score considering the some* what rough nature of the ground and the high wiad which prevailed during the play. Cox and Crocker were the first to wield the willow for Ashburton, but the former did not score, and the latter only made 3 when he was clean bowled. Jephson and A. Fooks, however, made a stand and the score stood at twenty-one when the former retired. Fooks stayed in till the fifth wicket was down, and the rest of the team m*de a po r show, the innings closing for 62, or 27 behind their opponents. In the second venture of Sel* wyn Crocker’s trundling proved too much for the batsmen, and after Wilson who made 22 and Anson, who put 13 to his credit, were got rid of the remainder of the team gave little trouble, and the innings closed for 44 This left Ashburton 71 to get, and that number of runs was obtained for the loss of six wickets, the visitors scoring a victory by four wickets. Oox (15) and Crocker (18) were highest scorers, and Andrews was not out with 14. The game was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody who took part in it, and the majority of the Ashburton men spent yesterday in fishing, returning home by last evening’s train.
