He left 1 imaru for Oamaru at 8 o’clock List evening. The Ashburton Orchestral Society’s concert, to take place in the Town Hall this evening, promises to be a great success. Not only have the local instrumentalists been practising at the various selections for some time past, but the committee have procured more assistance from Christchurch than was previously announced, Mr Poore, the well known flautist, having been engaged in addition to Mr and Mrs Corrick. From this it will be seen that a genuine treat is in store for lovers of music, and we confidently expect to see the hall crowded. When the memb -r for Ashburton met the Minister of Public Works on Monday, he pointed out to the latter and Mr Maxwell, the Manager of Railways, tho advantage it would bo to have a daily service orTthe Mount Somers line, instead of the train running only two days a week, as at present. The engine which runs to Mount Somers is employed at Ashburton in shunting, and if a shed were erected at Anama. the same work conld be done, and a train run to and from Mount Somers and here without any extra expense being incurred. Mr Mitchehon promise! to give the suggestion consideration, and it is probable that it will be carried out before long.

At the quarterly meeting of the Ashburton District Licensing Committee, held yesterday afternoon, the applications of Me-srs Mager and Olliver for licenses for the Wateiton and Wheatsheaf Hotels were renewed. There was a full attendance of the Committee, and Mr Caygill appeared in support ot Mr Mager’a application, and argued that the only reason that the license had been refused in the first instance was that the necessary notice had not been given in time. Since then, however, the Minister of Justice hal promised that if Ihe Committee saw their way to grant the license the Governor would be advised to validate the proceeding. The Committee, after hearing counsel, said that they were of opinion that they had not power to grant licenses otherwise than at the yearly meeting, but they had no desire to treat ihe applicants harshly, and if an authority could be produced from the Government in five weeks’ time, allowing them to reverse the previous decision, they would re consider tho matter. Ihe meeting was therefore adjourned for five weeks to enable the application suggested to be made to tho Government.

The usual monthly meeting of the South Rakaia School Committee was held in the library on. Monday evening, the members present being Messrs Hardy (Chairman), Howell, Cox, Broadbent, and Oxley. The master repor.ed the attendance as follows :—Average last month, 125 1 ; last week, 130 7 ; highest attendance, 140 ; and number on roll, 173. Owing to the bad weather lately the average for the past quarter will not equal that required for another pupil teacher ; there are, however, mo e children attending than the school will hold with comfort, one class having frequently to be taught in the porch. A new bell for the school is urgently needed. With regard to Christmas holidays, the school has only had three weeks’ holidays during the present year, and according to the Act the children are entitled to not leas than s-.x, while town schools get nine eeks in the year. The pupil teachers’ examination takes place on Dec. 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st, and the school cannot very well be carried on without them. The pump is again broken. On the motion of Mr Cox, it was decided to close the school on Dec. 14, and re-opan it on Wednesday, Jan. 2. The Chairman was requested to write again to the Central Board about a bell and alterations to the school, and at_ the next meeting to lay before the Committee a statement showing the number of attendances of each member. Messrs Broadbent and Oxley were requested to examine the pump and see if it could not bo arranged so that the children could not damage it. The meeting then adjourned.
