COUNTY COUNCIL. TO THE EL’CTORS OF T3E RIDING OF ASHBURTON. Gentlemen—You are called on by the Returning Officer to nominate someone to represent you in the Ashburton County Council. At the request of many of my brother farmer?, I take the liberty of offering you my services. There is every probability that the river protective works will soon be undertaken by the Council, and that it will bo part of its duty to exercise the powers of a River Board; I am of opinion that the farmers who will have to bear the cost ought, to be represented by one of themselves. I recognise the great benefits derived by the system of water races so successfully carried out by the Council, and would endeavor to extend the same to every farm where such is practicable. I know from experience the great inconvenience caused by the stoppage of a water race, and would do my beat to prevent a steady flow frombeing interrupted. Should you do me the honor of electing mo, I will endeavor to attend to the general business of the Council, as well as to the interests of the farmers of Wakanui, and that with strict impartiality, and to the best of my ability. I have the honor to be, gentlemen, Your very obedient servant, JAMES BROWN. Wakanu’, Dec. 3rd, 1883. 12 990
