WRECK OF THE TRIUMPH.
[special to press association.] Auckland, To-day.
Messrs Shaw-Savill’s direct steamer Triumph left for the South last night. She was observed this morning hard and fast on the Shearer rock, about a mile east of the Tiri Tiri lighthouse, at the entrance to the Hauraki Gulf, twenty miles from Auckland. The rook has two feat of water on it at low water, is steep, and is marked by a buoy anchored in fourteen fathoms of water. The Stella and other steamers have gone to render assistance. I.ATEP.. The steamer Triumph struck on the south-east side of Tiri Tiri on the fairway for the lighthouse. She is on the rooks, at the foremast water-tight compartment. There is 12ft of water in the compartment. It is supposed ah lo is through, but it cannot be ascertained yet. It is believed that she can be got off, having gone on for four hours !h; „bb tide. There is 17 fathoms astern, ami the crew are now shifting cargo afr, in the Impo that she will float. Ihe 17ft of wate: is abaft the forerigging, so that she is hanging by her bow. "it was a e'ear night, though dark. '1 he pilot left her outside Hangitoto at nine o’clock, and gave the captain his course. The steamer was going at a rate of 11 knots, and strnck very heavily. No light has been thrown on the cause of the disaster as the ourte should have taken her miles away from Tiri Tiri, and the lighthouse was right ahead of where she struck. The captain was on the bridge at the time. The vessel had been chartered to go down and take cargo off, which comprises—a quantity of railway iron from London for the South, fourteen bales wool, etc. The Triumph is 1,797 tuns register, and was built in 1880.
