The ordinary meeting of the Hospital Charitable Aid Board lapsed yesterday for want of a quorum, Messrs W. C. Walker and J. Jackson being the only members in attendance.

To-day the nuisance arising from the dust was well-nigh unbearable, and as we may expect nor’weaters to be prevalent during the next few months, the Borough Council should not delay in providing a remedy. Farmers interested are requested to meet the Cornmitthe at that hour on Mr Brown’s farm, where the river has broken through. The Queenstown correspondent of the Dunedin Star telegraphed yesterday— At two o’clock this morning a comet, nearly due south, was seen in the heavens. At 2.5 p.m. to-day a lurid mass sh >t through the sky, and was followed by a loud rumbling noise as of an explosion. Its direction was N.E. to S. K ”

At a meeting of the United Victory Gold Mining Co., Reefton, held at Dunedin yesterday, the Directors were empowered to let portions of the mine on tribute should they think fit, but a general opinion was expressed that this course should not be adopted till the results of the present operations were more clearly ascertained.

The following telegram has been re ceived by Chief Inspector Johnston, of the Rabbit Department, from the Inspecat the Lake Country :—“ Disease decidedly tuberculosis. Dr Douglas examined one rabbit, and found the liver and iunjjs badly affected. Ten shot last week were all afiecte I. Numbers are still|dying, but the disease confined to one locality.”

The Hon. E. Mitchelson, Minister of Public Works, and Mr Maxwell, General Manager of Railways, left Wellington for the South in the Takapuna yesterday afternoon. The object of Mr Mitchelson’s journey is to make a personal inspection of the whole working railway system of the South Island He will go as far as the Bluff, and is expected to be absent from Wellington about a fortnight. A young man named David Robertson, a recent arrival from London by the lonic, was received into the Hospital about 11 o’cl ck last evening, suffering fr m a broken leg. Robertson at the time of the accident was engaged grooming a horse belonging to Mr Grigg, when the animal kicked out with one of the fore feet, the blow being received by the unfortunate sufferer above the knee, causing a very bad fracture, which is likely to keep him confined to’his bed for several w eeks.

At the County Council meeting yesterday it was resolved on the motion of Mr Friedlander, seconded by Mr Jackson—- “ That this Council invite the Chairman of the Mount Hutt, Rakaia, Upper Ashburton and Mount Somers Road Board districts, to meet this Council on the 3rd January next, to consider some general scheme to relieve the several districts from floodwater.” The tenders of applicants for the office of Dog Tax Collector for the county were then considered, and Mr J. O. Bell was appointed, the remuneration being fixed at 10 per cent. The following tenders were accepted : Rakaia Gorge Bridge : Furneaux and Dunlop, Ll3O 9s 9d. Chatmoss Supply : Dalgetty, L 23 15s. J. Moir’s (Dunedin) tender was accepted for dog collars.

The Chairman of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce having telegraphed to the Minister of Public Works about the stoppage of work on the “ unemployed” section of the Otago central line. Mr Mitchelson replied as follows ;—“ Mr Blair has evidently misunderstood h s instructions. The following telegram was sent by my directions to Mr Blair on Saturday :— ‘ Hon Mr Mitchelson directs me to point out that the Government do not wish to throw such a large number of men immediately out of employment, yet they must insist on the number being . gradually reduced, giving preference of work to those who most need it, keeping in view the competency of the men employed ; and I am to remind you of telegraphing every Saturday the number of men employed.’ ” He adds that he has now authorised the re-letting of tbe Deep Stream contract, which the first tenderers failed to carry out, and this he says will get over the difficulty of the unemployed.
