ASHBURTON v GERALDINE.
The Ashburton County Eleven who went to do battle with the Geraldine Club yesterday suffered a reverse, the match being decided on the first innings, against the visitors by 53 runs. Geraldine went first to the wickets, Prebble and Simpson bowling. The two first men * ere soon dismissed, but on Temple and Godby getting together the field had some lively wo.k, the latter making the highest score for his side, namely 22. Coltman also played a good innings, carrying out his bat for 21. Prebble’s bowling was excellent, and he secured six wickets. Ashburton unfortunately played with only ten men, but it is extremely doubtful whether the result would have bean different had a full team been in attendance, the bowling of Pearpoint and Bethune being too much for the batsmen. Caygill was the only one who got into double figures, and the innings closed for the small total of 46. Geraldine in their second innings made 39 for two wickets when time was called.
