Native ObstructionistsThe Natives yesterday stopped the contractors erecting the Piako railway bridge, bn the ground that the Land Tax for the railway was not paid for. After some parley the contractors were alio wed ■to begin pile-driving in the bed of themeri but no work is to be done on the Native land till the Government are oommUoicated with. A Beacon Destroyed;. ■, ■s * Wellington, To-day-i To-day the Marine Department . have received a. telegram from the :harbor* master at Nelson to the effect that the steamer Grafton carried away the beacon at the French Pass at one o'clock this morning.
Promotion. Mr 0. T. O’Connor has been appointed Under-Secretary for Public Works, vice Mr John Knowles, resigned. Hie appointment is to date from the 17th. Found Drowned. Dunudin, To-day. The body of Charles Lockhart, aged 42, was found off the end of the Eattray street wharf this morning. The deceased, who was a fisherman and of intemperate habits, had been missing since the 7th inst. When last seen he was in a dingy making for a lighter in the bay, on which he slept, and the dingy was found capsized the next day.
