Melbourne, Nov. 7. The inquiry which has been held lately into the working of the Land Titles Department is concluded. The report will be presented shortly. It is understood that it deals exhaustively with the unsatisfactory conduct of the department, in the careless manner in which titles have been dealt with; in the delays in the transaction of business; and in the inaccuracies in descriptions of land and other matters. The list of delegates to the Irish Australian Convention, which meets on Nov. 7th, embraces over a hundred names. Among the Melbourne delegates is that of the Hon. Francis Longraore. Sinclair, the promoter of the Orient Sweep, was fined LSO and LIO costs; other smaller fry were fined in small sums. H. M. S. Nelson arrived in Hobson’s Bay on Sunday. She will be docked during her stay here. The success of the Hon. James White in three events—the Maribyrnong Plate, Derby, and Cup—has given general satisfaction, as he is favorably known as a keen sportsman, who always races fairly, and the public know his horses run in earnest to win.
The Y.M.C. A. held a picnic at Frankston on Cup day. A quantity of speeches were made, and the Salvation Army held a grand field day. But in spite of these counter attractions the Cup attendance was the largest on record. Being race week the town was crowded,and all the theatres were doing good business, ’‘Silver King ” especially being crowded to excess nightly. Sydney, Nov. 7. The Conference which has been sitting for some time to discuss the provisions of the new Lani Bill has concluded its labors, but no definite result has bien arrived at. \n influential meeting composed of persons interested in the working of the Land Act has unanimously condemned certain portions of the measure. It has been decided to send delegates to Sydney to endeavor to obtain a modification of the Bill. The eight hours demonstration was concluded on Saturday by a dinner to the Committee. The demonstration was the most successful ever held in Sydney, the profits amounting to L 450. Adelaide, Nov. 7. Universal sorrow is felt at the death of Sir Willi mi Morgan, and both Houses adjourned out of respect to his memory. G. Coppin is playing a farewell season in “ Paul Pry.” A team of cricketers has arrived from Melbourne, and will play the principal clubs hero. The new city baths wore opened by the Mayor (Mr Fuller) in the presence of a large number of visitors. Brisbane, Nov, 7. Bishopßedwood of Wellington preached on Sunday to a large congregation. Tuesday was proclaimed a general holiday in consequence of the arrival of the new Governor, Sir Anthony Musgrave. His Excellency, on landing, was received with enthusiastic cheers and a salute from the battery. The Mayor presented an address and a procession escorted him to Government House where he was sworn in.
