morning by a dredging- party. Ho wss with his wife and mother-in law at 9 o’clock, on - Thursday evening, ostensibly to get some supper beer, but nothing had since been heard of him. He came from the Ba'ler, where be had previously been an hotelkeeper, and afterwards was in the employ of the Harbor Board, and it was thought at the time that ha had gone there by the Wallace, which left the same evening for the West Coast on the South Island, as he bad some money to come to him there. It is not known whether it is suicide. < r accident. No cause is assighed'for the former. Ah inquest will be held.
Fire. • ” Christchurch, To-day. About three o’clock this morning Mr Innea’a Waltham Brewery was discovered on fire. The City and Railway Brigades turned 'out, but the wooden portion of the bffilduig. was almost entirely destroyed. Tfie'daniage is estimated at L 3,000. The insurances are—South British, L 700; Lqndpn, Liverpool, and Globe, i>'so; Australian Mutual, L850.‘ The London, Liverpool;' and Globe had 1600 .n the malthouse, which was of brick, and was only partially damaged. . A fire broke out at one o’clock this morning,in Hatton, King and Co.’s confectionery factory, Hanover street. The front part of’the building was completely gutted,, and only a small quantity of stock was saved Ko explanation as to tlie origin of ; the fire can be given, but it is supposed' that it! must have been caused by a. spark from the stoves. The property is insuredfor L1,20d, the insurances being London r and Lancashire, L 240 on the building ; on the plant and machinery L4BO in the Equitable, and the same r mount in the .Australian Mutual Mr Hptton stages that’ building was overinsured, but the stock and plant was worth nearly .L3,0Q0, and he expects the firmtolosaheayily.
