At the turn into the straight Violin gradually improved his position, and at the rails challenged Master Agnes, a grand race homo ensuing in a victory, purely by

Mr P. Butler’s ch g Charmer, by ■ King of Clubs—Charm, 2yrs, 7st (Butler) 2 Mr E. Cutta’a b c, by King of Clubs— Watersprite, 2yrs, 7st ... (Brown) 3 Hyacinth, Marion, Carlton and Dime also ran. Betting—Even money Hyacinth, 2 to 1 Carlton and Lady Evelyn, 3 to 1 Marion and Watersprite colt. The lot were despatched to a good start after a deal of fiddling at the post, and Dime’s colors were in front, but only for a few moments, as the Watersprite colt passed her and led into the straight by two lepgtha. Hyacinth here came to grief, breaking some bones in his shoulder, and Waddle, who threw himself off, received a good shaking. At the rails Lady

Evelyn came through, and passing the leaders, won by three lengths, Charmer second, the Watersprite colt third. Time —lmin 3|sec. Hyacinth ultimately had to be destroyed. The inside totalisator had 748 investors, 162 being on the winner ; dividend, L43s. The Scurry Stakes, of 10 sovs, catch weights, over four furlongs, was won by Mr Hugh Vallanoe’s Maid of Erin, by a short head. Seven started. To-day’s Racing. [by telegraph.] Christchurch, To-day. Charmer and Marion also ran. Betting —6 to 4 agst Lady Evelyn, 4 to 2 Charmer and Marion, 5 to 1 the others. After a lot of trouble a fairly good start was effected. The Watersprite colt and Lady Evelyn at once came away from the others, and a magnificent race ensued all down the straight, and resulted in Lady Evelyn winning by a shorty head. Ugly buck an indifferent third. well, was never afterwards headed, ultimately winning easily by several lengths, Wild Boy and Clarence raced the straight 'or second honors, the latter gating the best of it.
