SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting was held on Thursday last. Members present— Messrs Mackie (chairman), Maun, Osborne and Coster. The minutes of last meeting uere read and confirmed. Mr Mann stated that he had not been able to go over the roads with Mr Osborne, but he would taka an early opportunity of doing so. It was decided to fill up the ballast pit complained of by Mr Allan, and to replace the fallen fence ; the labor gang to do the work at once.
The Chairman said he had been requested by a number of ratepayers to have about a mile of the road between Hinda and Moßhail’s formed There is a considerable traffic on the road, and also some heavy tussocks. It was resolved to call for tenders for skim ploughing 1 mile and 68 chains. It was also decided to skim plough about a mile and a half of the road from llobbe’s hut to the river road, and to sovv the same with grass seed. Tenders to be called in a fortnight. A petition was read from a number of ratepayers asking to have the road formed from the Chertaey boundary road to its junction with the Kyle road, about two miles, —It was resolved on the motion of Mr Mann, seconded by Mr Coster, to call for tenders for the work. A letter was read from Mr Stewart stateing that he had found out—after working for three weeks on the main river road —that he could not make his horse feed out of the contract, and unless the Board could give more money for the work he should be obliged to throw his contract up.—lt was decide! to call for fresh tenders for the work, and not to give him any extra money. A letter was received from Wiremu Waihira, of Kaiapoi, asking when the money would be paid for the Native Reserve land taken for road works ? —lt was decided to reply that as soon as the Board received the title to the land the money would be paid. Mr Harrison waited on the Board and asked permission to open a gravel pit on the Board’s property for the purpose of shingling water race crossings, he having obtained the Council’s permission to make a water race through his land. He also asked the Board to cut down the terrace on Baxter’s road.—lt was decided that the gang cut down the terrace, and that the clerk point out a portion of the reserve for a ballast pit, providing that the fencing be made good again. The County Council forwarded copies of the waterworks by-laws and requested that one be posted in the office. Tenders for the following works were opened and accepted as follows ;—Formation of Welshe’s road—P. Clifford, at 7s per chain; metalling Main River road — P. Wilson, Is 3d per yard. Accounts were passed for payment to the amount of L 415 10s 7d, and the meeting adjourned.
