C.J.C. SPRING MEETING.
The following scratohings have taken place ; Free Handicap —Mischief, Emir Boy, Tim Whiffler and Hippodamia. Riooarion Handicap —Emir Bey and Mischief. [by telegraph.] Christchurch, To-day. Good work was done on the course this morning. The gallop of the morning was that of Hippodamia, who covered the Cup distance at top speed, accompanied by Trinket for the first mile, and Emir Bey for the second, the mare going in excellent form. The Jilt and the Poet did two and a half miles at three-quarter pace Ta-man went twice round at a steady gallop, and Adamant was treated to a gentle exercise for a mile and a half. Lady Emma did a serviceable gallop for three miles, finishing at a strong pace. Welcome Jack and Envious did steady work twice round. The Watersprite colt and the Miss Flat filly came a half mile at top speed, as also did Marton and Ugly Buck, all moving in very good style. Violin, Molly Bawn, and Sunlight did a fast three-quarters of a mile. Talebearer and Charter, with colors up, did serviceable work once round. Liverpool and Leopold cantered a mile and a half, and Taiaroa and Hyacinth went once round at a strong pace, while Wild Boy and Prospero compassed three miles fast.

The following are the betting quotations : Maeibyrnong Plate. 4 to 1 agst Helene Y.R.O. Derby. 3 to 1 agst Off Color 6 1 Martini Henry Cup. 11 to 1 agst First Demon 14 l Legrand and Nicholas [special to press association.] Melbourne, Yesterday. The weather is bad for work on the course, and nothing important has been done to-day. Legran 1 has the past day or two been doing good work. Lesbia, notwithstanding the bad weather, did a serviceable gallop. Magnet and Fryingpan also went twice round splendidly. Sant«. Claus was brought on the course and did useful work. Archie and the Drummer ware sent along for a mile and a half. The former finished strongly and did the best gallop which has yet been done by Derby horses on the tan. Hurricane and Kathleen Mavourneen went twice round together. Sardius went once round the uourse, and came home fairly well. Oalma had a gallop at threequarters pace, and this horse is said to have done the best gallop on the tan among the horsss engaged in the Gup. Pollij was sent twice round, and finished well. Off Color is now freely backed for the Derby at’3 to 1.
