ASHBURTON COUNTY CLUB vBOROUGH CLUB. The first match of the season played on the Domain ground, commenced yesterday afternoon, when the County and Borough Clubs met to try conclusions. The result, so far, is greatly in favor ot the Borough, who proved themselves too strong for their opponents in every departm°nt of the game; It is, however, only fair tosay that the County eleven was not by any means a representative one, as several players were drafted in at the last moment. Proceedings began by Thomas and Cox going to the wickets to face the

bowling of Coffey and Prebble, but * separation was made before long by Cox being bowled by Coffey, and the same, trundler dismissed E. Fooks fair a duck’s egg, although the latter remained at the wickets'some time aind showed good defence. The captain and A. Fooks .made somewhat of a stand, but the bowling of Jephson, who hied replaced Coffey, and Prebble was too. good for runs to be made. The two batsmen were the only ones to make double figures, and after Thomas had been dismissed the wioketa fell with great rapidity, and the innings closed with only 48 runs to the credit of the County. In the first innings.,pf,.the Borough, the fielders were treated to a quantity of leather hunting, the bowling being very simple and the batsmen hitting all round. Prebble played wall lor his 62, although be had good luck, and Coffey made 33 (not out) by mercilessly slogging every ball- that came to him. Robertson and Jephsoa with 20 and 15 respectively also got into double figures,: and when stumps were drawn at six o’clock the last man had been dismissed with the score at 177, or 129 ahead of their opponents. The match will be resumed on next Wednesday week. ’ The, following are the scores of yesterday .
