A meeting is to be held on Tuesday next at Mr Harris’ Hotel, Winslow, to arrange preliminary for the New Year’s races. On the Domain ground the cricket match was commenced between the County and Borough Clubs, there being a good attendance of spectators.

At the Police Court this morning, before Mr T. Bulloc'v, Thomas Daly was fined 10s, with the usual alternative, for drunkenness. A. Beard, who was alleged to be concerned in the recent robbery at Methven, was remanded, bail being allowed, himself in LSO and one surety for a similar amount. Thomas and Blackburn intend coming from Victoria to be present at the Otago Caledonian Society’s New Year games to contest the wrestling championship with Robertson- Thomas, it will be remembered, came over some years ago and challenged Tyson, but was thrown by him. Among the Christmas cards now being sold in Ashburton, not the least attractive are some to be seen in Mr T. F. Farley’s shop. 'they have not only the merit of novelty but thoy are also of colonial production, constating of handpainted views of New Zealand scenery on transparent cards. As showing places in this country and affording glimpses of the life led hero they are far more appropriate for sending Home than those imported from England, for the obvious reason that the latter will be well-known to the recipients, whereas the local productions will be new to them.

We have been asked to publish the following letter addressed by the Private Secretary of his .Excellency the Governor to the Secretary of the Ashburton Racing Club:—“Government House, Wellington, 15th October, 1883.—Sir, —I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 11th instant. His Excellency desires me to say in reply that he much regrets that he will not be able to be present at the Ashburton races on the 15th and 16oh November, as in consequence of the state ot Lady Jervois’ health, he has been obliged to abandon his intention of taking a house at Christchurch for next raonlh, —I am, Sir, your obedient servant, F. This wai an action brought by the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies, in pursuance of the Building Societies Act of 1866, to recover from Joe Dransfield, John Richard Gill, and John Edward Hayes, of Wellington, the sum of LSOO, upon a fidelity bond, given by the defendants in regard to Charles White, late Secretary of the Wellington Building Society. Counsel, in opening the case, said that the statsroent of the claim alleged that the said Charles White was at one time secretary of the Wellington Building Society, that the Society was properly constituted, that the bond pf fidelity was entered into by the defendants on behalf of the said Charles White, that the bond was for LSOO, that the said Charles White received sums amounting to L 1,866, which he did not account for, and that he unlawfully appropriated the same to his own use.

Mr Persson’s business notice appears in another column. Mr 11. M. Jones notifies in this issue the arrival of the October number of the “ Young Ladies’ Journal. ” He has also received a very fine collection of Christmasand New Year cards, containing views of New Zealand scenery, which both from their artistic merit as well as being marvels of cheapness, should command an extensive sale. A disastrous occurrence, resulting in the death of <-ne man and the serious injury <>f another, occurred on the Oxfordsheffield extension yesterday. It appears that about 60 men, who have recently been taken on to work on the railways from the ranks of the unemployed, were engaged in loading ballast into tracks on the line referred to, between Oxford and the Waimabariri. The statement of Thomas Brown, one of the gang, is to the effect they had commenced to load the trucks, and between 11.30 and 11.45 a.m. the train was being shunted, to gather up some boulders, and stopped suddenly, throwing some men off. One of them, named John Boland, fell under the wheels of a truck, upon which he was riding. Another of the gang, named Samuel Mann, ran to the spot and saw Boland under the wheels, apparently quite dead. One of the truck wheels had

evidently passed over the deceased’s head and neck, crushing the lower jaw and fracturing the vertebne. Another man— Edward Drinkwell —was also thrown from a truck, and sustained a fracture of the left thigh and some severe flesh wounds in the leg, the injury being caused by one of the wheels partially crushing the limb. The dead and injured men were conveyed to Kaiapoi, where a stretcher was obtained from the police, upon which Drinkwell was placed, and they were sent on by train to Christchurch in charge of three of their companions. The train with its sad freightage reached Christchurch about 6p. m. The police attended to the removal of the injured man to the Hospital, where everything possible was done to alleviate his sufferings, and they aho con- - veyed the body of Boland to the Hospital morgue, to await the inquest. It is stated that the men had, shortly before the accident, been warned by the guard of the train of the danger of riding on the trucks, but paid no heed to his admoni--1 tion. Drinkwell is a resident of Christchurch, and the deceased resided in the ’ Windmill road with a man named Burns. Boland was apparently about 35 years of age.
