THE MAORI OBSTRUCTIONISTS.

The hearing of the charges against Aropeta Haerituteranga for obstructin ' Mr 'ihorpe, the’ Government Surveyor, came on before the B.U. this morning. Three separate charges .were laid, comprising larceny of a theodolite, valued at L 35, being an . indictable ofence; obstructing the survey by unlawfully taking the theodolite ; ; and removing the survey poles. Evidence was heard at length on the first charge, the defence being that no felonious intent, was disclosed. His Worship agreed with this view, and dismissed the charge. The accusbd pleaded guilty to the other two charges, and a fine of L 25 in each case was imposed, making with costs a total of L 55, or in default of distress two months’ imprisonment. In the charge of assault against two natives named Ruke and Ranao, who were also charged with assaulting Mr Thorp a in connection with the same affair, the case was adjourned till later in the day, to enable further evidence to be brought for prosecution.
