It is stated that the Governor, Lady Jervois, and family, are likely to spend the summer months in Dunedin. Owing to Parliamentary and professional engagements, Mr Edward Shaw haa declined an influential requisition to contest the Mayoralty of Wellington. John Donovan was brought up to-day at the R.M. Court, before Mr Baddeley, charged with wife desertion. He. was arrested by Constable Neill at the Hinds, and his Worship remanded the prisoner to Dunedin.

A meeting of the Congregational Union passed at Auckland yesterday a resolution expressive of congratulation at the amalgamation with the Southern Congregational Union. The Rev. J. Robertson was elected Chairman f< r the ensuing year.

Some excitement was caused this afternoon by the capsizing of a loaded wagm on the line near the railwaj station. Owing to mis-management in shunting the truck ran off the line and turned oyer, and about half an hour was occupied in getting matters all right. The services at St. Stephen’s Church nsxt Sunday morning and evening will be conducted by the Bev. E. A. Lingard, incumbent of St. Luke’s, Christchurch. The rev. gentleman’s many friends in Ashburton will be pleased have this opportunity of hearing his familiar voice.

Constables Mehan and Stanton returned to Wanganui from the Manawatu last night with Aropeta, the ringleader in the interference with Thorpe’s survey. Aropeta, who offered no resistance, was arrested without difficulty under a warrant on a charge of larceny of a theodolite.

; The third annual meeting of the Christchurch Working Men’s Club was held last night. The report showed the year’s receipts to be L 2,225 10s, and expenses L 2.007 2s 7d; assets, L 4.476 13i Id; liabilities, L 3,335 Os Id. The Club has now over 400 members, and has just completed a commodious hall for entertain ments.

The King of Hawaii, having written to the Government intimating his wish to visit New Zealand next year, and asking if he would be received officially, Ministers have replied, saying they will be glad of his Majesty’s visit to the colony, and will accord him an official reception. He is not likely to leave Honolulu till after Parliament meets next April. • The anniversary services of the Willowby "Wesleyan Church are to be held next Sunday, on which occasion the Rev W. Keall, of Leeston, and formerly circuit minister 'of Ashburton, will preach. The indispensable tea and public meeting will be held on the Tuesday following, end as this annual festival is very pop ular with a section of the community, it is expected that Ashburton Wesleyans and others will be well represented rn this occasion.

Yesterday afternoon, Hugh Minnis, carpenter of the Doric, was drowned in Lyttelton. He was one of a number of the crew of the steamer cruising round the harbor, in one of the ship’s boats. From some , cause the boat turned over near the reef, and Minnis, who essayed to swim ashore, was drowned. The boat was under sail at the time, and was seen from shore to go over. Help was not long in reaching the seven men who were clinging to her, and they were rescued. The body is not yet been recovered. The usual monthly meeting of the Longbeach District School Committee was held in the main school on Monday ; present—Messrs Croy, Donaldson, Painter, and Shearer; Mr Painter in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The master’s report from each school was very satisfactory. The Visiting Committee for the side school reported damages to the trees by cattle straying among them, and it was resolved to impound any horses or cattle found straying on the school grounds. The side school having no gymnastic apparatus, Mr Shearer asked permission to erect a swing for the children some gentlemen in this neighborhood will bear the cost. The Committee consented .with pleasure. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following telegram, dated October 3, 1883 Wool—Sales closed firmly. 3he total quantity sold during the sales is 353,000 bales. 60,000 bales are held over for future disposal ; 170,000 bales have been taken for export. Combing washed has declined Id per lb since the close of last sales. Medium and inferior clothing washed have declined Id to l£d per lb. Market is unchanged for superior greasy, fine scoured crossbred, and fine washed crossbred. Medium and inferior greasy, coarse scoured crossbred, and coarse washed crossbred have declined ltd to Id per lb. The market easier for long staple merino scoured and crossbred lambs. The market is firmer for fine greasy crossbred and merino lambs. Other scoured descriptions have declined Id per lb.

The largest meeting of the Star of Ashburton Loyal Orange Lodge, No. 23, over held here took place last night in the Arcade Chambers, the occasion being the installation of officers for the ensusing year. The following officers were installed: Bro. S. B. Nelson, W.M.; Bro. Rooney, D.M.; Bro, T. Sealy, Secretary; Bro. A. Connolly, Treasurer; and Bro. S. Elliott, tyler. After the ceremony was concluded, P.M. Bro. Minnis presented the retiring master, Bro. J. Sealy, with a handsome past master’s jewel, and in doing so spoke in term of high praise of the manner in which the recipient had performed his duties during his terra of office. Bro. Sealy acknowledged the gift in suitable terms, and shortly after the meeting adjourned.

The New Zealand Shipping Company has received a cablegram from London, dated October 3rd, reporting that the Catalonia had left St. Vincent for London, that her refrigerators were working satisfactorily, and the meat in good order. F. C Bourdon, a clerk employed in the New Zealand Grain Agency Company’s office at Timaru, was arrested on board the Te Anau by Detective O’Connor yesterday while going North. tie is charged with embezzling money amounting L 6 Is, and there are supposed to be other defalcations to the amount of L 250. At the conclusion of the ordinary business of the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, a Jinan Jnamed Mulford made an application for the varying of an order made against him some time ago, to the effect that he should pay a certain amount towards the support of his wife and children. Mulford now wishes to resume cohabitation with hia wife, and Mr Baddeley, after hearing evidence, decided to adjourn the case so that some arrangement might be come to .between the parties interested.

Mr Nicholls, of Ashburton Forks, had a narrow escape from a serious accident last evening. It appears that the gentleman in question was riding into town, and on coming to that portion of the Alford Forest road at present closed for traffic his horse came in contact with the rope drawn across, throwing his rider heavily. The animal got away, Mr Nicholls having to walk into Ashburton, but fortunately beyond a severe shaking no great injury was sustained by the latter.
