Messrs Matson, Cox and Co. report upon the Live Stock market in the Ashburton district for the week ending October 2, 1883 : On' Tuesday last we held our usual weekly sale of cattle, sheep and pigs. In sheep the entries were- .fairly numerous and of the description clearance at values fully is per head advance apon latte rates. The attendance of fanners, butchers, dealers and others was above the no doubt, drawn from curiosity ■td see now much the Winchmore sheep_ (sold by us) would bring. The sheep, 200 in the line, were the cynosure of all eyes, being really magnificent sheep, large 1 sized, well-woolled and brought forward for sale in the pink of condition,, reflecting the greatest credit, upon the grazier, M. Stitt, Esq. These sheep sold aiirtuu'fqs fid, 19s qd, 20s 3d to 22s per head, and in ,oqt .opinion were the best, sheep ever sSid in Ashburton. yards. We also sold 80 alias;' 210 crossbred hoggets at 12s 2d; 50 do at lis id; 200 crossbred hoggets at ns; 200 h ggets at rrsßd; no cuumerino ewes at 2s 3d; 7° merino ewes at ss; etc., etc. In cattle the entry was small and very-little business was done. No entry of ptes.;.. Our quotation for mutton is to 3d-perlb; beef, 20s, 22s fid to 25s per roolb.
