ASHBURTON GAS.
To the Editor.
Slr, —It seems to me a short-sighted policy of t he Gas Company charging the almost prohibitive rates that they do. In other towns in New Zealand the gasworks are under the Municipal Councils, and those bodies do all they can to encourage the use of gas, both for lighting and cooking purposes. I don’t [for a moment mean to say that we are to be charged as low rates as in Dunedin and Christchurch, but I do say that a vast reduction might bo made, and 1 feel sure, with proper management, the result would be an increase of returns to the Company, as the use of gas would be almost general.—l am, etc., Suggestion. Ashburton, Oct. 2.
