The conflagration originated in a shop occupied by Jacobs, a bootmaker. Jacobs, his wife and two children who, slept in' the upper storey narrowly escaped. Mrs Jacobs was awakened by the bedrqom becoming full of smoke. -At the same-time-she noticed flames issuing from theshpp; window below. A neighbor attracted'hy;*' her screams procured a ladder and rear; cued one of the children by the windoWV Jacobs, in his excitement, got out akjhs other window, and fell to' the ground, bnif> - escaped unhurt. Mrs Jacobs and ilie n other child escaped by clambering, into the window of an adjoining shop. Fire Brigade succeeded in. confinipg/the . ravages of the fire to Jacob’s shop, though Hare’s (stationery), Bucktoa’s (second? hand)aad CaYaDagh’a shopi.a and stocks are much injured*,-Jdwoh’#' stock was insured for lilOO in‘ the. dard; Hare's for L2OO in , .the Norwich * Union; Cavanagh, Ll6O in,, the South_J British; Buckton’a LSO in.the IJpion.
