Mr Baddeley gave his decision this morning in regard to the charge brought against Mr Quill for having committed a breach of the Licensing Act r the evidence in which case was heard last week. The Magistrate said that he had carefu ly considered the contention raised by the learned, counsel, and after studying the lease he came to the conclusion that Mr Quill had no control over the billiardroom. The lease was granted prior to the present Act coming into force, and the conditions were very explicit on the question he had referred to. The r evidence showed that there was no -attempt on the part of Mr Quill to evade the Act, and the report of the Inspector was thoroughly satisfactory, a fact which was especially gratifying, inasmuch 'as the opinion' offered by Sergeant .Felton was quite gratuitous. The case would.be dismissed, but at the same time the Magistrate advised Mr Crisp to bring, the matter before the Licensing Committee, so that that body might clearly understand that the premises for which Mr Quill held a license did not under the present circumstances includo'the billiard-room. A requisition to Mr D. Williamson, asking him to-stand for the mayoralty appears elsewhere. , _ > • The usual meeting of the Debating Society will be held this evening.
