Ashburton Guardian Office, Friday afternoon. Messrs Robert Wilkin and Co. report At the Addington Yards on Wednesday, a very scanty supply of fat sheep came to hand. Quite two-thirds comprised merino wethers, and only a small proportion of which were prime and good quality. Owing to the supply being short of the requirements of the trade, competition was animated and sales were effected readily at a satisfactory advance on last week’s rates. Fat cattle Medium supply yarded, prime pens of bullocks made an average of 25s per loolb, while second and inferior pens sold at an average of 20s per loolb. The total entries for the day comprised 4,23» sheep, ..ijr.headof cattle, and 125 pigs, of which we 'quitted on behalf of various clients prime and crossbreds from 15s 6d to 17s 3d; fat steers, to L 8 each. At our sheepskin sale on Thursday our catalogue comprised 1,673 skins, which We disposed of at a slight increase of jhifiks-ccJinpared with last week’s rates. The lots offered were principally butchers’ skins, only a small proportion being from the country. Bearing’s country crossbreds, is Bd, 2s 6d, 3s, 3s rod, 4s 8d to ss; country merinos, is lid, ?.s sd, .35, 35 Bd, 4s, 4s fid 105 s 4<J. Messrs Miles and Co. report upon the live stock market'for the week ending Thursday, 13th Sept., as follows : —Tinwald: At this market on Tuesday last only a small entry of sheep came to hand, the quality of which was only medium. Prices, however, in merinos, wereun 'advance of Christchurch rates. We quote mutton at 3d per lb for prime quality. —Cattle: Ip this class there was a heavier entry than we have seen for .some time, beef selling at 22s fid to 255. In stores there was aiperceptible advance in prices, and it is evident that kS spring advances the demand for store cattle will increase considerably. The recent bad weather in this district has been very severely felt amongst the flocks, large numbers of lambs having succumbed. The paddocks show unmistakeable signs of the heavy rainfall, and, except in the lighter lands, farming operations are almost at a standstill.
