ASHBURTON A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the Committee of the above Association was held this afternoon in the Arcade Chambers, when there were present the President (0. J. Hawdon, sisq.,) in the chair, and Messrs T. Bullock, M. Stitt, J. W. Oliver, J. Carter, J. Strachan, R. Miller, D. Thomas, and Dr Trevor.
The Secretary read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were confirmed. INDU3TEIAI. EXHIBITION. The Secretary of the N.Z. Industrial Exhibition wrote asking the co-operation and support of the Association.— the letter was received. NEW MEMBERS, Mr J. Stoddart, ol Willowby, Mr Pierce Weldon, Aahburton Forks, and Mr W. H. Rule, Chertsey, were elected members of the Association. PRIVATE PHIZES. The following list of private prizes was submitted and aporoved of : 0. G. Havdon (President’s Gup), value LlO 10s, for the largest prize taker in merino sheep. 0. G. Hawdon (President’s Cup), value L 5 ss, for the best roadster or hack (mare or gelding) up to 14 stone weight, bred in the County of Ashburton. Matson, Cox and Co., LI 11? 6d, for the best five hoggetts, the progeny of pure longwool rams out of merino ewes. Matson, Cox and Co., L2 2s, for the best five merino ewes with crossbred lambs at foot; ewes and lambs to be taken into consideration.
Matson, Cox and Co., H lls 6d, for the best five fat crossbred wethers of any age for butchers’ purposes. W. Lyttelton, LI lls fid, for the best Hampshire Down ram of any age. W. Lyttelton, LI lls fid, for the best Shropshire Down ram of any age. Dudley and Northey, L 3 3s, for the best ten fat lambs, first cross out o merino ewes.
D. Oliver, L2 2s, for the best five merino rams under 18 months.
Friedlander tiros., LI Is, for the beat:our, bushels of linseed.
J. W. Oliver, LI Is, for the best four bushels of Hunter’s white wheat. J, W. Oliver, til ls, lor the'best four bushels of Essex wheat.
J. Strachan, id. la, for the best four bushels of rye grass.
C, W, Purnell, LL Is, for the best four bushels of barley. A. Harrison, LI Is, for the largest collection of small birds’ eggs (no entry for this prize). J. Carter, LI Is, for the best lady’s hack.
J. Orr, LI Is, for the best keg of salted tutter fit for exportation, not lesj than 281bs. Butter to have been salted thirty days previous to the Show. Miles and Co,, L 3 3s, for the boat yearling draught colt or fitly. 1 ' ; Mi es and Co., L 3 3s, for the best shorthorn bull calved since July 1, 1881. Dr Trevor, L2 2s, for the best Berkshire boar.
Messrs Tucker, Rested and Co.’s, Mr J. Gilmonr’s, and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company’s prizes (respectively, L2 2s, L2 2a, and L 3 3s) were left ir the hands of the Secretary and Mr Thomas to allot. APPOINTMENT OF JUDGES. Mr Thomas suggested that kindred, societies in other parts of the colony be asked to recommend judges in the various classes. Mr Bullock moved that a subcommittee consisting of Messrs Stitt, Oliver, Miller, and Thomas bo elected to appoint judges on the principle suggested by Mr Thomas. It was decided on the motion of Mr Stitt, seconded by Mr Carter, that the appointment of marshals be left in the hands of the Committee who appoint the judges. MISCELLANEOUS. It was resolved not to engage a veterinary surgeon this year.—The arrangements in connection with the band were left in the hands of the Secretary.—lt was resolved that the privileges in connection with the Show be sold by auction by Mr Bullock. - ? v ‘ PLACE OF HKKlONh \\'i\ $ ? A conversational discussion took place on the question as to .whether theShpw should be held on this or the otherside of the river, ah opinion being expressed that if Tinwald was not chosen the people in that district would have a Show of thoir s own and secede from the Ashburton Society.,/ Mr Thomas moved, and Mr .Carter seconded —“ That a general/ mating should be called for October 14th, for!the purpose of discussing the advisialulity> of holding the 1884 Show at Tinwald/ / . This was carried. AFABMPKIZB. , , Mr Strachan brought up a suggestioh which he had mentioned at last.meeting of the Association, to the effect that a prize should be offered for the best managed farm in the district. Approval was generally expressed concerning the matter, and on the motion of Mr Bullock, seconded by Mr Tbomas/ i was decided to discuss the question afr the special general meeting to ’be held : on October 14th.
