LONG-BEACH ROAD BOARD.
The regular monthly meeting of the' above Board took place on Friday last, the ! Inembers ‘present being Messrs J. Grigg (chairman), E. H. Dobson, F. Lewis and G. Gilmour. '. .The minutes of the previous meeting Wore read and confirmed. COKKESPONDKNCE. From the Charitable Aid Board, enclosing, statement of receipts and expenditure to 30th June.—Received. From the County Stock and Saleyards Company, asking the Board to fence the reserve adjoining,the Tinwald saleyards ;; alsq atating that the Company had de-: cided not to lease the reserve.—Ordered; to lie on the table. ,; From .Mr F. G. Wright, in reply to the Chairman’s letter re audit of Road Boards, stating that there would be no time this session to amend the law, but that no doubt a change would be made next session.
From Mr B. G. Wright, asking that t the metalling-of ,thirty chains of the Win- 1 dermere road, so long promised, should be proceeded with —Resolved that tenders be called for next meeting. From J. Shearer, asking that Shearer’s road from the Wheatstone drain to Ashton bridge be formed as petitioned for previously.— Resolved that tenders for. he work be called for next meeting. From J. Shearer, stating that the valuation for the road he. is to purchase from the Board is too high, the land included therein being broken and unploughable, but that he was prepared to give at the rate of L 8 per acre.—The Board thought the offer reasonable, and resolved to accept it. . , ; From J. Small, accepting the Board’s offer of Lll for land, on top of terrace ; but that the land he Had to buy was not worth xnorethan L2, per acre; he would be willing to give L 3 per acre.—The -Rbard resolved to adhere to their former valuation, viz—Lll per acre. • ’ Frotn Dudley and Northey, complying with the Board’s terms for the, purchase Of land in Terrace roads,, provided that the Board pay for the fencing of the portions takhn out of lots 2,3, and 4.
The Surveyor was:instructed to interview Jffr Diidlpy with regard to this,mat-: ‘ter/' Ab the upper portion of the road to be purchased was of little importance, Mid the cost' of maintaining such would "be a large sum, beside the additional expenditure 1 that would be required for forming and metalling, thus making the acquisition of the new road cost more than the Board would derive from the sale of
the closed road. ■'"'From the ratepayers, requesting the Board to portion of this road that is at present unformed, and also to.repair the ford opposite McGee’s. ■; From the County Council, acknowledg- ; ing the Board’s letter of July 31st, and; in reply, informing the Board that the following resolution had been passed by the Council, viz—“ That the Longbeach Road Board’s offer be acceptsd to pay one-fourth Tor clearing Carter’s Creek, 'ftud'those interested be requested to pay the other one-fourth, the whole not to exceed L7s.”—The Clerk was instructed to send a copy of the above to the persons interested, provided the Council had not already done so. From the County Council, stating, in reply to the Board’s request, that the Government have been requested to gazette the. Great South Koad a main road under, the Roada and Bridges Construction Act., . From same, in reply to Board’s letter of Ist August, and enclosing schedule supplied ■by the <■>’ overnment containing nftmes'of main roads; also, that assistance can only be obtained for construe-, tion or damage by extraordinary causes, not for ordinary wear and tear ; also, that the Council has no control o ver such: gazetted main roads, unless it applies for grants under the Act. . From the’clerk to the Upper Ashburton Road Board, calling the Board’s attento the very objectionable crossing opposite the Upper Ashburton Road Board’s office.! —The letter, was ordered to lie bn t’.n table. From Wise in d On.. Dunedin, in answer to the Board’s ieucr to acknowledge this liability of the Board to pay* for the directory, as the late clerk had ordered it without the Board’s sanction ; and stating that the order had been signed; by him in his official capacity ; that they must Tequeiat payment, and would not take back the directory.—Received. surveyor's report. The Surveyor reported as follows : ‘ •. i. Coldstream..road: The contractor for forming this road is progressing. We have ar-, ranged with the contractor to make the cutting leadingtpwards Coldstream homestead,. as authorised previously.—2. Dobson’s and Isleworth road; Breaking stones, etc. The contract for breaking stones, etc., in this road has’ been completed. An extra length of chains on Dobson’s road has been added to the contract, it being thought advisable as the men. were on the ground to have’ this small piece done in order to make the road uniform throughout.— 3. New Park road ■■ The ford authorised to be made in this road has been completed. —4. Surveyor’s road : The re-placing of a culvert on this road has been executed, as authorised. In order to get the water which stands about this place a good deal away, we have had the creek cleaned out for some distance. — 5- Beach road ; The contract for repairs to cutting and approaches to bridges, etc., on creeks between Longbeach and Lowcliff, has been satisfactorily executed. —6. Ford and drain on Dawson’s road : As instructed at last meeting we have let the deepening and widening of side l , drain and making of ford on this road to James' Croy, for the sum of Lto.— 7. Approach to! river near Ashton :, This approach having been washed away, and it being the only one on a' public road on this side of the weir for a' long ■ distance, we are having same repaired, and also by request of the member for this Ward we are having a dangerous hole in the approach to the bridge- on Shearer’s road filled.. The total'cost of these two jobs will be L2.—B. Shepherd’s road : The formation of this road has been satisfactorily completed. The report was adopted. • 1 •■ ■ MISCRLXANEOUS.
' It was decided to have stanks put on the Longbeach road near Longbeach. Mr Gilmpor, reported the bridge to be in a dangerous state. The Surveyor was Instructed to have the necessary repairs executed, and drains to creeks put right. Mr Gilmottr in the meanwhile agreed to undertake to have the dangerous part at once filled up. The Clerk was instructed to inquire into the position of the Tinwald streets with regard to dedication. Mr Dobson reported that considerable dainage has been caused by the last flood ixt the;road by JSo. 3 creek, Lowcliffo. The Surveyor was instructed to inspect, and if necessary cad for tenders by next meeting. , - , Mr Gilmour moved that it be an instruction to the Surveyor that in a general way 'that all work let by the B ard over jmOPQ&df.lS bo publicly tendered for,” seconded.
Mr Dobson moved that the Survfyor draw specifications and call for tenders for all;.works exceeding L 5, unless otherwise authorised. ■ —Seconded by the Chairman’tafd'Carried. Mr Dobson applied for certain fords on the, IgJeworth road. The Surveyor was instructed to examine, and call for tenders for clearing weeds at side drain, Dobson’s road,.oV,< if not'dikely to be over L 5, to have the same done at once.
