MOUNT SOMERS ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the Mount Somers Road Board was held on Monday, the 3rd lost , there being present —Messrs Peache (chairman), 1 Edson, Walker, McFarlane and Mcßae. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. railway crossing. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Austin re crossing required on the railway line near the present terminus at Anama station. THE MOUNT SOMERS RAILWAY. The question of the further extension of the Tinwald and Mount Somers railway having been considered, it was resolved —“That the Chairman bo- requested to write to the Minister of Public Works, asking Government to give early notice to this Board of the appointment of the Royal Commission re the Mount Somers railway extension, and when they will sit to take evidence ; also that a copy of the above resolution be forwarded to the County and Borough Councils, re-' questing them to take similar action in this matter.”
It was also resolved —“ That this Board is of opinion that the action of. the member for the district in calling for a Royal Commission was wholly uncalled for and misleading, which can only result in unnecessary expense to the public purse, as Government is already in possession of ample evidence as to the wishes and requirements of this district.” On the motion of Mr McFarlane, seconded by Mr Edson, it was carried—- “ That the thanks of this Board be forwarded to Mr Ivess for the action he has taken in connection with the Tinwald and Mount Corners railway extension.” MISCELLANEOUS. The following notice of motion, given by Mr Walker at last meeting, was read, viz —‘ That two members of the Board (to be decided by lot) shall retire in the first week of May, 1884, and that two other members (also to be decided by lot) shall retire in the first week of May, 1885, as per sections Nos 75and 76 of the Road Board Act, 1882.”—On the motion of Mr Walker, seconded by Mr Edson, the above resolution was adopted. The Clerk was instructed to reply to the County Council’s letter of 24th ultimo re damage to Thompson’s track, also to write to Mr Baxter, asking him to meet the Board’s Overseer as soon as possible re Taylor’s Stream bridge. The Overseer’s report was read and considered, when several works requiring immediate attention were ordered to be completed. It was resolved—“ That the Property Tax Commissioner be written to and informed that the Board cannot strike a rate in the absence of the information already applied for re the Crown lands liable to pay rates.” The, Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Steadman, of the Canterbury College, Christchurch, re three shingle reserves (one acre each) required by the Board on, College reserve No. 2007. The tenders invited having been opened,
the following were accepted:—No 15, W. Fergus forming Gough’s road, 7s per chain ; No ,17, S. McLymont, shingling Mount Somers road, Is lid per yard ; do, forming Mount Somers road, 5s 6d per chain ; No 18, do, repairing road from Mount Somers school to river (shingling), Is 6d per yard; No 19, McGregor, shingling road from Bowyer's stream to cutting, Is 4d per yard ; No 20, James Johnston, repairing road Taylor’s stream to North Branch, Is 8d and Is 6d per yard; No 21, W. Fergus, forming road to Buccleuch station, 12a 6d per chain ; No 22, James Brown, keeping lords in order, L4O ; No 23, P °nd e of”'ou a th'^Asfiffurfe r ii v ß rfW 9 x# o S|ll per chain. ACCOtTNIS. Several accounts were passed for pay-, ment, and the meeting adjourned to Tuesday, October 2.
