[ New Plymouth, To-day - The steamer McGregor, which went * ashore on the south spit yesterday, was 1 floated off with last night’s tide, but the * schooner Falcon is still on the north ' beach. It appears that the bowline parted and caused the accident. i Arson. The inquest on the fire on Poverty Plat lasted till past midnight, when the jury brought in a verdict that the evidence pointed in a circumstantial manner to Thomas Weir, who was then committed to take his trial on a charge of arson at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Fire. Wellington, To-day. A fire early this morning destroyed the premises occupied by Messrs Phillips and Pollard, photographers. The fire appeared in the first instance in the room oyer the operating room, and had a good hold when observed by a passer-by. The premises, which were owned by Mr Toomath, were completely gutted and the stock destroyed. The building was insured for U 350 in the New Zealand office, and the stock for L2OO in the Scottish Imperial. Nothing is known as to the origin of the fire. A Smuggler. Dunedin, To-day. At,the Police Court Edward Tibbetts was fined L 4 10a and costs, for smuggling jewellery.
