THE WRECK OF THE ALMA.
[by telegraph.] Auckland, To-day. The enquiry into the wreck of the barquentine Alma was held to-day before Mr Smith, R.M., and Capt Fraser, Nautical Assessor. John Paterson, master, deposed that value of the vessel was LI,BOO, and the cargo L 650. This was his first trip in the vessel, which was not swung prior to sailing, and no deviation card for the compass was on board. She struck on the Elizabeth Reef at 12.30 a.m. on Aug. 3. The weather was calm but dark. He stated that the mate was in charge when the vessel struck, but Alexander, the second mate, said he had gone below to call the captain, and was not on deck for fifteen minutes before striking. The crew were all sober. Only two men were on deck when she struck, and all were saved in a boat. The Court deferred judgment, and the decision will probably be given to-mor-row.
