Ashburton Guardian Office, Monday afternoon,
Alfred Harrison reports for the week as follows On Friday, August 24, I held a sale for the trustee in the estate of George Parkin, when a quantity of timber, builders material, etc, was disposed of, bringing very good prices.—On Saturday, Augustus, I held my weekly sale, and a more unsteady market, as regards prices, it was never my lot to report. Respecting horses little can be said. p°ws sold very well; and were enquired for. Pigs m some cases brought high prices, and in others biddings were languid. Carcase pork, to 4 Ud. Tes, 2 is. Fowls, is 6d to 3s 6d : turkeys, 12s to 16s per pair, Produce genervaried, so that it is impossible to give reliable quotations; white kidney potatoes sold from 30s to L 6 per ton. There was a ,very large attendance. l/Lt T, Bullock reports of the Horse Market for the week ending Saturday, August 25: There was an average attendance of farmers and others. A small entry of horses—only 21 being entered for the day’s sale, and for all descriptions the biddings were more animated than at the previous Saturday’s sale. There were no first class draughts entered, and most of the medium draughts being of an inferior description, low prices were obtained. Out of those yarded (21) 12 were sold at the following prices—Medium draughts, Ll 4 to L2i 'ios; 2 and 3-year-old colts, JL.I4 10s to Ll 6; aged and inferior draughts, Ly 10s to Lio ; light harness horses, L 6 15s to Ly 10s; hacks, '£3jsto L 6 15s (inferior). Oats—There was a better demand for them than at last sale; inferior feed damaged by wet, is 4d per bushel ; short oats, is lod.
