PARLIAMENTARY.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
Thuhoay, August 23. In the Legislative Council the Law Practitioners Act Amendment Bill was read a second time.
On the motion of the Hon Captain Baillie it was agreed that in future the Local Bills Committee should make no recommendation to the Council to suspend the Standing Orders to allow local Bills to pass in cases where the promoters failed to comply with the Standing Orders. The Guardian Trust and Executors Company Bill was partly considered in Committee, and progress was reported. The Hon Mr Mantbll moved—" That the Taiaroa Land Bill, which had been reported on adversely by the Private Bills Committee, should be committed to a Committee of the whole Council. Sir G. S. Whitmokb supported the Bill.
The Hon Dr Pollen and the Hon Mr J. C. Richmond opposed the Bill, as it would, by treating one native exceptionally, be creating a precedent which would lead other natives to ask for the same privileges who might not be so qualified to use them as Mr Taiarofi. The debate was adjourned. The Otago Harbor Board Reconstitution Bill was further considered in Oommitte, and the Council adjourned from 5 to 7.30.
