ASHBURTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
The following business was transacted yesterday after we went to press; RIVER EN‘ ROACHMENT AT WAKANUI. Mr D. Wilson waited on the Council for the purpose of pointing out that the floods had caused extensive damage in the vVakanui district, and the settlers: wished it to be repaired as soon as possible. He thought there would be no objection to a rate being struck to pay the amount required, which the Engineer estimated at L 1,200. The Chairman asked if Mr Wilson would agree that any temporary repairs necessary should ‘6 a first charge on the rate, and, on receiving an answer in the affirmative, said that the Council would do what they could in the matter, which would be placed in the hands of the Protective Works Committee. ' CARTER’S CREtK.
On the motion of Mr Taylor, secouded by Mr Bullock, it was resolved—That the 'Lougbaach Road Board’s offer to,, contribute one quarter of the coat of clearing Carter’s Creek be accepted, and that those interested be requested to pay the other one quarter, the whole work not to exceed L 75. LONGBEAOH MAIN ROAD.' In accordance with a request made by the Longbeach Road Board, it was resolved to recommend to the Government to gazette the Main South road to bo a main road, and to point out errors in the map. OVERFLOW AT ASHBURTON FORKS. A petition received from! residents of the Ashburton Forks district, pointing out that the river had overflowed and was causing damage, was referred to the Protective Works Committee. FIRE BRIGADE. It was resolved that the grant to the Ashburton Fire Brigade should be Ll 5, instead of L 25 as heretofore. dobbin’s ford bridge.
In answer to a communication from the Selwyn County Council it was decided that that body be informed that the Ashburton County Council refuse to sign the joint letter forwarded by the Selwyn Council re the Dobbin’s Ford bridge. Mr Winter moved, and Mr Jackson seconded — That the application for the Dobbin’s Ford bridge under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act be withdrawn.—This was carried, Messrs Lambie and Taylor dissenting. taylor’s stream bridge.
The Engineer was instructed to attend immediately to the matter referred to in a communication from the Mount Somers Road Board. MOUNT SOMERS RAILWAY. It was resolved that the Chairman write to the Minister of Public Works, enclosing a copy of a resolution passed by the Mount Somers Road Board, and urging the carrying oat of the line. The members of the County also to be communicated with to the same effect. W\TER-RAOB BY-LAWS. The seal of the Council was affixed to the by-laws, which were adopted. POUNDKE fcPER. Mr Price, junr., was elected to fill the post of poundkeeper temporarily, until the end of the present lease. SLAUGHTEkING LICENSE. A license was granted to Messrs Annett Bros, for a slaughterhouse. A FOBDSM \N’S DUTIES.
On the motion of Mr Lambie, the Clerk was instructed to write to the Selwyn County Council re the duties of th?.foirdsman at Dobbin's Ford, requ sting the latter to spend some of his spare time in improving the roadway and cuttings. The Council then adjourned till 11 a.m. on September 12 th.
