[per press association.] A Successful Start. Auckland, To-day. The floating of the new Mortgage Company, with a capital of L 2,000,000, has largely exceeded the expectations of the promoters of the Company, as the applications for shares from all portions of the country are far in excess of any number that can be allotted them if the entire 100.000 shares were issued instial of 50.000 as originally intended. It is not known what action the directors will take to meet the demand for shares, but probably a larger number will issue than was contemplated. Even the applicants cannot by any means receive the number of shares they have applied for. A Gum Monopoly.

Mr Oppenheimer, of Auckland, has arranged for the working of the gum fields of New Caledonia. He has a concession to dig and export gum for ten years, and has made a contract with the Messageries Maritime Comp ny, to convey gum from New Caledonia to London for 60 francs per ton. Mr Oppenheimer is to have 350 convicts employed in digging and seventy natives. He intends to send down from 100 to 150 experienced gum diggers from Auckland. Three Runaways. Three boys named Thomson, Parker, and O’Leary, the latter boy from the South, are mirsing from the Training School since July 25th. A boat was stolen on the same night, and as a gale was blowing at the time, it is feared they a:e drowned. The same boys bolted with Mitchelson’s yacht some time ago, and were caught. Severe Earthquake. Gisborne, To-day.

The most severe shock of earthquake ever experienced here occurred this morning at three o’clock, followed by several minor ones. The first seemed as if som« powder magazine had exploded, and caused much consternation amongst timid people. The Golden Crown Claim. Wellington, To-day. The value of the gold taken from the Golden Crown claim is stated by good authorities to range from L 3 15s to L 3 18s per ounce. Fire. Dunedin, To-day. A six-roomed house at Roslyn, owned and occunied by William liarnes, was totally destroyed by fire last night. The origin of the lire is unknown. The building was insured for Ll5O. Ecclesiastical. The presbytery have refused to sustain the call of Napier to the Rev Charles Rosa.

Licensing. Mr Haggitt applied to the Supreme Court for a mandamus compelling the Licensing Bench to issue a license for the railway refreshment rooms.
