Mr Mark Herman has declared that none of the alleged New Zealand diamonds submitted to him are genuine. Mr P. Cunningham’s cablegram is not yet to hand. The latest new sensation in the matter of electric railways, says “ in the Leader, is supplied by Professor George Forbes, of Edinburgh, who has declared that it is not impossible to perform the journey between London and the Scottish capital in three hours and ahalf. He might as well have said two and a-half, and then have struck off the fraction or have left it standing by itself, the non-impossibility being as applicable to one term as another. But he goes further, and declares that he hopes to live to perform the journey himself in the three hours and a-half smoothly and without jolting. Progress is surely not to stop when he dies, and why should not the next generation go faster still? It is very good policy to seize Time by the forelock, but such enthusiasts as the Professor woul i grasp Time by the hair that has not yet grown. The origin of this last outburst is to be found in a paper published by Mr Barnet Le Van, in the United States, in which he claimed to have demonstrated the possibility of running an ordinary train at the rate of 100 miles an hour, and of course it is easy for one electrician to outbid anothtr on a mere question of possibility. The new idea is to apply the dynamite force to every wheel in the train separately, and to dispense altogether with a locomotive of any kind; but it is only an idea, the electric motors to perform such work not having been yet invented. The electric railways already in operation aie very humble affairs, and it is not easy to get anything like reliable information about them. What is called a curious incident ” occurred lately on the Portsmouth line. It

appears that only a part of the line is furnished with electric conductors, and a steam engine as well as the electric locomotive is used. There was an accident to the steam engine, owing to the bursting of a boiler tube, and an electric locomotive was sent to the rescue. The two electric locomotives brought the damaged steam engine back in triumph to the station. The enly thing that is curious about this incident is that the so-called electric railway is not exactly an electric line, else why is the ordinary traffic carried on by steam 1 The electric railway is so far only a puny child, and yet it is always spoken of as if it were really a giant.
