At the annual meeting of the South ' Canterbury Jockey Club last night, the balance-sheet showed the receipts for the r{ year to be L 1,927, including a balance of L 505 at the commencement, and an expenditure of L 1,877, including the clearing off of a mortgage bn the grand stand of L 647. The property of the Club 5 ; the course is grand stand and appurtenances, fencing, plantations, etc., valued < at L 2,600, which, under the new Baoe- .. course Bill, must be repaid to the Club by the trustees of the reserve as the funds. ... permit. A motion was carried to abolish the system of blackballing in the election of members of committee, and to substitute open voting, a majority to elect members. A vote of thanks was. passed: to Messrs Kerr andMeikle, two members of the Committee, who went to Wellitagton to obtain the removal of objectionable features in the Racecourse Amendment ~ Bill passed this session, and it was agreed ‘ ' to pay their expenses. The action of the; 1 member for Timaru in connection with •; the Billfwas severely commented on, as;." ; was also his remark at a political meeting “ in Timaru, that a racing fraternity were nothing but a lot of blacklegs.
