IN THE LOBBY.

[from our parliamentary correspondent.] Wellington, To,-day. It is stated that the Wanganui Bridge Bill will be strongly opposed by Messrs Montgomery arid Fish, who denounce it as a favor to a Government supporter who defeated Mr Ballanoe at the last election. It is said Mr Ballance has supplied the particulars of a Bill of indictment against the Government on this head. It is not thought the Fire and Marine Insurance Companies Bill will be further proceeded with this session. The Wellington Chamber of Commerce is actively “lobbying” against the measure, and two matters of importance remain to be brought forward. A motion was to be submitted affirming that the constitution of the Legislative Chamber ought to be elective, and probably two days will be needed to debate this [large abstract question. Another important matter is Major Atkinson’s promised bill on compulsory national insurance, which measure he may •r may not submit to a second reading this session, according to the progress of business. I understand that a Joint Committee on the direct steam service question have passed a resolution requesting the Government not to proceed further with their negotiations until the Committee shall have presented their final report.
