IN THE LOBBY.
[prom our parliamentary correspondent.] •' Wellington, To-day A rumor is in circulation to the effect that Mr Vincent Fyke has written a letter to the Opposition whips, announcing that in consequence of the “ disgraceful and unfounded charges ’’ preferred by Mr Dargaville against the Treasurer, he had found it necessary to secede from the Opposition party. I learn, however, that the rumor is untrue. Mr Fyke says he did write to the Opposition whips concerning Mr Dargaville’s charges, but he did not express his determination to secede altogether from, the ranks of the Opposition, although he characterised these. charges as being such as any political party ought to be ashamed of, and he stated that in future he intended to hold himself as a “ free agent.” It is understood that a determined effort will be made by the Government to bring the session to a. close this month, but in view of the large amount of business still to be transacted I scarcely think the aession will terminate earlier than the -first or perhaps even the second week in September. It is expected that the debate on the Native Lands Laws Bill will conclude to-night. Mr Sheehan ' and Sir George Grey are looked to make important speeches. Judging from the feeling of the members the Bill will probably be accorded a second reading without a division.
