The New Hebrides are very fertile. Any quantity of sugar-canes, spices, etc.,.can be produced on them, and these articles will become valuable exports soon. The Bishop of Melbourne thinks that, the result of the present system of education will be that we shall develop a class similar to; the lower grade of society in Paris. Among the visitors to the Court during the hearing of the case Hunt v. Sir A. Gordon were a number of ladies, a large number of members of the Bar, and several members of Parliament. Mr Archibald Forbes thinks the Junction of the Orara and Clarence one of the prettiest spots in Australia. It is the scene of those “crags of glitter’' and ♦* dells of gloom ” that Kendall loved. . J. .B. Gianville’s coach factory in Victoria Street, Christchurch, was totally destroyed by fire last evening. Four buggies and a few wheels were all that was saved. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The insurance was L 175 on the building in the Union, and L4OO on the stock in .the Colonial. The native hapus at Parihaka, says the Taranaki Herald of Thursday last, have, been vieing , with each other in feasting Te Whiti and Tohu. Te Whetu’s hapu, however, excelled anything that had previously been accomplished.
