Mr Service has despatched a letter, through the Governor, to Earl Derby, expressing regret at the decision of the Imperial authorities regarding New Guinea and requesting a reconsideration ; also urging a Protectorate for the Pacific Islands if annexation be undesirable. Two sisters of Lieutenant Waghorn, the pioneer of the overland Suez route, *.ndia and Australia, are now living in Melbourne in absolute poverty. Acting on representations, the Cabinet decided to allow them LI per week. The Melbourne Tramway Bill has been passed in the Assembly. Louise Pomeroy, the well-known actress, was married at Sandhurst to Arthur Elliot, a member of the dramatic company. Sydney, August 1. As the steamer Corinna, for Launceston, was leaving Newcastle on Friday she came into collision with the powder hulk, alongside of which was a lighter with a large quantity of dynamite. It might easily have resulted in a disastrous explosion. As the result of the recent row at the Wallsend Municipal Council, when Aiderman Owen was knoc ed down among the chairs by the Mayor, the latter functionary has been fined 40s for assault. At the Police Court on Saturday, John Rose, otherwise called “ Happy Jack,” a member of the Salvation Army, was committed for trial for assaulting a girl who was also a member of the ■- rmy. The question of federal quarantine is now before the Cabinet. !t is intended to write to the other colonies to discuss the subject. Adelaide, August 1. A deputation of business men waited on the Minister of Education to request that steps be taken to connect the establishments with the police stations by means of electrical alarms. Mr. Parsons recommended them to confer on the matter privately, as it was not advisable to proclaim the means used to prevent burglaries. The report of the Building Committee for the 1885 Exhibition recommends the site on King William road, between the Government House and the river. Brisbane, August L Sir A. Palmer, Acting-Governor, has received a telegram from Earl Derby asking whether the late Sir Arthur Kennedy was present at the meeting of the Executive Council when the annexation of New Guinea was authorised. The reply was sent by cable—stating that he was present. Mr Morehead, Postmaster-General, has issued his election address. He adheres to the trans-continental scheme and land grant system, and is utterly opposed to the introduction of Coolie or Chinese labor. Mr Griffith, leader of the Opposition, takes the same, position in regard to labor, but opposes the land grant plan.
