Ashburton Guardian Office, Friday Afternoon. The following is the Christchurch Corn Exchange report forthe week ending Friday, 27th inst:—There is nothing in the aspect of the grain market which calls for special comment, business during the week having evoked no new features. It is satisfactory to note that the English telegrams continue to report increased values for wheat. —Wheat: Good milling samples, 4s to 4s 2d per bushel. Tuscan of good quality, 2d per bushel extra ; second quality, 3s 3d to 3S gd per bushel; chick wheat, 2s 3d to 2s 6d. —Oats; Good stout milling,' 2s to 2s 2d per bushel; feed quality, •*as gd to is lid per bushels—Barley : Firstclass malting samples, 4s 3d to 4s 6d per ... bushel; second quality malting and feed, 2s 4d to 3s gd per bushel.—Grass seed: Fanners Simples, 3s 3d to 3s gd per bushel; machine dressed, 4s to 4s 3d ; cocksfoot, 4d to per lb.—Potatoes : A few small sales continue to be made, but there is no decided improvement to note in the market—-30s and 32s 6d for small parcels has been given. There is, however, no disposition on the part of buyers to speculate, hand to mouth transactions being the order of the day.—Cheese and butter ; 5d to s&d for the former, lod to for the .latter.
Messrs Robert Wilkin and Co. report ; At the Addington Yards on Wednesday a ; full supply of fat sheep again came forward for the week’s supply, a large proportion of which comprised merino wethers. For prime crossbreds late quotations were fully maintained, while medium sorts and merinos suffered a further drop in prices, and several drafts were in consequence withdrawn from sale. Fat Cattle—A small entry to hand. A few pens comprised prime quality steers, which changed hands at an average of ,22s 6d per loolbs. The total entries for the day comprised 7,561 sheep, 130 head of cattle,, and 25 pigs, of which we sold prime crossbred wethers at 17s 3d and 18s; good do, from 15s to 15s 6d; medium do, at 13s gd and 14s; fat steers, atXy 5 s ea( -h j do heifers, to.L6 10s; pigs, at 42s each. At our sheepskin sale to-day we catalogued 1,461 skins, 34 bags fat, and g casks tallow. Wc sold country crossbreds from 3s 7d to 4s 6d ; country merinos, 4s, 4s . 4d to 4s gd; butchers ' crossbreds, 4s 6d to js 6d ; a bne , 5° sheep from the Frozen Meat Factory* belonging to Messrs J. and R. Inwood, reaching the latter price; butchers’ merinos, 3s 8d to ss; fat, 2?|d to 2?id per lb for first quality, and up to 2d per lb for second quality; tallow, from 26s to 30s; hides, dry salted, 3d% ; wet salted, 3>£d per lb; calfskins, per lb
