[bKUTBR’P TELEGRAMS —COPYRIGHT.] The Tasmanian Legislature. Hobart, Yesterday. Parliament was opened to-day by the Governor. In a speech on the occasion, His Excellency offered his congratulations upon the prosperous condition and satisfactory progress of the colony. After referring to the Postal Conference recently held in Sydney, the Speech remarked upon the large number of immigrants now leaving England, and announced that it had been decided to appoint an AgentGeneral for the colony in London. Parliament will be asked to concur in an Address to the Queen praying that effectual measures may be adopted to prevent the occupation of the Pacific Islands by foreign powers. The Revenue accounts show in a very marked manner the continuous advance of the colony, justifying the remission of Customs duties upon certain articles of general consumption. The annexation questions continue to occupy a large share of public opinion throughout the colony. The Municipal Councils of Ballarat and Horsham have passed resolutions supporting the Government, and it is expected that other Municipalities will follow suit.
Bailway Management Sill. In the Legislative Assembly last night the Railway Management Bill, providing intet alia for the appointment of three Railway Commissioners in addition to the Minister, was read a second time without division. Sporting. Sydney, To-day. For the Hawkesbury Handicap 47 horses have made the necessary first payment. The latest are— Kathleen Mavourneen,Segenhoe, Sweet William, and Sir Modr'ed.
