Ashburton Guardian Office, Monday aftemo*n,
Mr T, Bullock reports of the Horse Market for the week ending Saturday, July 21 ; There was an average attendance of county settlers and others, but only a small entry cf horses. There were several inquiries for usefur farm horses and medium draughts offered suitable for farm work, brought high prices, but the entries, with a few exceptions, were of an inferior description, and for this class of stock there are few buyers, and only low prices obtained. Out of the 21 brought forward for sale 13 were sold at the following prices :—Medium draughts, Ll 6 to L 29 ; 3" year-old colts, of an inferior description, L 7 to Hi; aged draughts, L 8 to Lll ss; light harness horses, Ly $s to L 8 ; hacks, L 5 to L 8 ros. I offered the trustee’s interest in cropping land in J. Bright’s estate at Barrhill, and after a fairly spirited competition was knocked down to Mr James Lemon for LJ3. Mr Alfred Harrison reports his weekly sale as follows;—Saturday, July 2lst. Horses very dull; good draughts are inquired for, but none offering. Cows also were dull to-day, although the best were all sold. Pigs sold fairly well—prices all round are down a trifle —carcase pork, to 3&d ; fowls, 2S to 3s 3d per pair; turkeys, 10s per pair. Produce—Potatoes, 55 s P er ton ; chick wheat, is to 2s 6d per bushel; grass seed, 2s 6d per busheloats, is pd per bushel; carrots, 30s per ton; tea, 21s (guaranteed). A large quantity of sundries was put through as 'usual. There was a good altendance, but biddings generally were languid, giving one a forcible reminder of the dulness of the times.
