B s stated that when he was Minister of Justice in May or June last year, the subject cf an enquiry had been discussed, but ho did not think the matter then ripe. Arrived from Home. The ship Oxford is at the Heads. The Mail. The Wanaka with the English mail has just arrived. The Te Anau with the southern mails will leave at 3 p.m. The Art Exhibition. The Fine Arts Exhibition was opened hv tho Governsr at 2.30 this afternoon. Pound Drowned. Dunedin, To-day.
Peabody of a woman about fifty years cf r;u> was found floating in the harbor at Port Chalmers this morning. She was well dressed, but had only threepence in her packet. There is no clue at present o.h to her identity.
