Messrs Friedlander Bros. (|n conjunction vrithMessrs R. Wilkin and Co., per Mr F. C. Tabart, auctioneer) repert on the live stock market for the week ending July 20th, 1883, as followsAt the Tinwald yards on Tuesday last the attendance of buyers, both local and otherwise, was numerous, but the stock yarded for the day’s sales was not up to an .average entry for these yards, _ consequently buyers acted with more spirit than has been observable lately at our Ashburton .sales. Sheep; The greater portion of the entries made in this line consisted of fat sheep, very , few stores being yarded. We quote crossbred ewes (fat) from 13s 6d to 155 96, merino ewes (fat) from 7s gd to 8s 3d, crossbred lambs 9s, merino wethers (good mouths) 7s gd to Bs. Cattle : Beef was in good supply and of fair average quality. We quote same from 17s to 20s per loolb Stores were largely represented, and were sold fairly well at prices folly up to our last quotations. Kgs s a few small lines were yarded and fetched their market value.
Messrs Miles and Co, per J. T. Ferd, report on the live stock market, etc., for the week ending Thursday, July 19th, 1883, as follows Addington : Full market of sheep, including several lines of really good quality crossbreds. Merino wethers were only of medium description, and in consequence of the low prices ruling several lines were withdrawn. The same remark will also apply to crossbreds that were not in prime condition. Store sheep were in larger supply than usual at this season of the year, crossbreds selling at from gs to ns, We quote the average price •of mutton at 2j£d per lb, while a few lines of undeniable quality and handy weights brought fully 3d. There was an average supply of fat cattle, and we .quote beef at 17 s t 0 215 P er too lb. A limited number of store cattle was yarded, and they sold at from Li 12s 6d to L 5 lOS per head. A line of useful steers, from eighteen months to two years’ old, brought L2 15s fid. A large number ol pigs came forward Small slips sold at from 8s to 16s; porkers, from L2 to 355; bacon, pigs, from Lz .to 12 jys. The total entries for the day were 6,966 sheep, 249 head of cattle, and 312 pigs. Our entries were on account of the Cashmere Estate, Messrs Henderson and Mcßeath, H. Brett, W. McLennan, P. Grant, C. Withell, W. B. Clarkson, and others. We obtained top price for the day with Mr W. B. Clarkson’s crossbreds at 18s 3d, obtaining also for the same owner 17s 3d, 17s 6d, and 18s. Mr C. Withell’s cansignment brought 17s 3d and 17s 6d. A line of maiden ewes on account of Mr W. B. Clarkson realised 13s 6d, 13s gd, and 14s. Mr McLennon’s merino wethers brought gs gd. Other soles equal to quoted rates. In fat cattle we also topped the market with a grand line on account of Messrs Henderson and Mcße th, bred and grazed by the Hon. John M'Lean, heavy weights and extra prime quality—they sold at Lio, Lil, Li 2, and up to Ll 4 P er head. Our other sales in beef were according to our returned quotations. The Cashmere pigs were of very superior quality, and excited keen competition .—they realised from 42s to 52s each. Other lines sold at 26s 6d, 3 2s > an d 3^ s > for slips.—Tinwald: At these yards on Tuesday last there was a small entry of both sheep and cattle. We sold fat crossbreds, on account of Messrs Dudley and Northey, at 15s gd each. On account of the Chatmoss estate, we sold crossbred ewes at 11s 6d each. Aline af merino wethers, on account of the Hon John McLean, realised Bs, A consignment of merino lambs, on account of Mr I. R. C. C. Graham, sold at 3s 2d. Mr J. Wheeler’s crossbred lambs, a line of 100, brought gs, and a line of mixed crossbreds, account same .owner, realised 7 s 9d* Cattle: On account; of Mr J. J. Withell, a line of small-sized springing heifers sold at L 3 15s rer* l We also sold a consignment of store steers at 22s 6d. In pigs we sold a lot of small slips, from the" Chatmoss Estate, at 8s 3d. Fat sheep sold at prices folly equal to Christchurch rates. . Cattle we quote at 16s to 20s per loolb. Business in stores is still limited, and prices are low.
