T>E PAYMENT OF WORKMEN JAf EMPLOYED ON CONTRACTS LET BY PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT. Attention is called to clause 23 of the Conditions of Contract, which provides that workmen, tradesmen, and laborers of every class employed on the works to which these conditions refer shall be paid their wages in full in money, current coin of the colony, at least once in every fortnight, and no ticket or other system of payment by provisions, liquors, or goods will on any pretence be allowed. The workmen of every class shall bo paid on the works if it be possible, or in some building adjoining, and in no case shall they be paid at a publichouse or other place where liquors or refreshments are sold.
The penalty for any breach of this clause, as often as the same shall happen, is fifty pounds ; and it is lawful for the Minister for Public Works, without any notice to the contractor, or any further process of law, to deduct the penalty or penalties from any moneys that may be due or owing to the contractor under this contract, or that may hereafter be due or owing thereunder.
