Church Matters. - The parishioners of All saints Anglican ObojrcK, now vacant, have passed a resor Jution condemning the present system by which the Anglican clergymen may leave their church at three tenths' notice, while the parishioners have no means of getting rid of him. They urged the nominators to insist’in any nomination of a new parson, on a clause providing, that the agreement shall only be for seven years. The Rev. Whyttock, recently returned from Dunedin, has been appointed assistant to the Rev. Thomas S'purgeon, in the Baptist Tabernacle here, and Rev. Mr Clark, of West Melbourne has been cabled for, to supply Mr Spurgeon's pulpit, while he goes on a holiday to Australia.
The Gaol Inquiry. Wellington, To-day, The Dunedin Gaol Commission resumed this morning. Two prisoners have been examined. The evidence so far is unimportant with the exception that one prisoner stated that he often saw the warders drunk. On one occasion Sergt. Watson was so drunk that he let half the prisoners out of their cells. Hunt 7. Gordon.
At the Supreme Court the case Hunt ▼; Gordon was resumed. Several of the issues in the declaration were struck out, and his Honor ruled that Sir Arthur Gordon had the power to deport any person or persons whom he considered were dangerous to the peace of the islands. The jary were re-empanelled this morning; and Mr Harper is now addressing them. the R. M. Court at Leeaton as ill-advised and arbitrary, and resolved to petition for the resumption of fortnightly Courts at Leeston and Southbridge. FireThe shop of Makanini, a barber in Colombo street, had a very narrow escape from destruction by fire last night. A number of pictures in the window were ignited by the gas, but after hard work the flames were extinguished before the Fire Brigade arrived.
