The mail steamer also sustained injury, and will have to ‘he repaired before proceeding . ibis afternoon. She takes specie from Sydney to San Francisco to the amount of L 1,350. Mainwaring, T. C. Case, S. P. Stard and Goold. A Criminal Libel. Gisborne, To-day. Kenneth Kerr, editor of the newspaper --called JPacts, was committed for trial for ■ libelling Mr W, L. Rees. Supreme Court. Wellington, To-day. At the Supreme Court this morning Mr Shaw continued his address in the case of Hunt v Gordon, and it is expected he will continue till late in the afternoon. He‘■fore the Chief Justice the case of Mokena Kohere, M.L.C., v Reimschneider (native ' Interpreter) was brought. This is an action to recover upwards of L7OO, the amount of remuneration which the defendant is-alleged not to have accounted for. It was agreed to defer the case until next sittings. ' Committed. At the Police Court a young man ’ named H. Nicholla was committed for trial for forgery. A Wreck. It having been reported to the Secretary of the Marine Department that a quantity of wreckage had been washed ashore about three miles north of Opunake, the signalman at that place was directed to make careful search along the beach, and report upon the same. He states that he examined the wreckage ...which is on the beach north of tha Te ' Namu pah, and that it consists of a portion of a vessel’s deckhouse, the timber of which is kauri, painted white, the wreck of a boat built of kauri, painted black, and two ash oars seven feet long, branded with a broad arrow on the blades, and one boat yard twelve feet long. At a meeting at Southbridge, the locale of the alleged goldfield was said to be at the Taumatu, near the Ninety-mile beach, and a number of people have gone prospecting.
A Speculation. Dunedin, To -day. The Arcade has changed hands, Mr Kennedy, of New York, purchasing it for I<lß,ooo.
