IN THE LOBBY.

[FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARY CORRESPONDENT ]

Wellington, To-day.

The no-confidence debate, for from the tone of the speeches it is nothing else, drags on. Probably it will close to-night, but it is really difficult to say positively. Among those who have yet to speak are Messrs Pyke (who is expected to make an interesting speech), Bracken, Macandrew, Shephard, Trimble, and Fergus ; while the redoubtable Seddon threatens to occupy the House four or five hours. Seeing that the debate has already extended into the third day, it is not impossible that members will keep it up to the end o f the week, and that the division will not be taken until the small hours of Saturday morning. The result. of the division of course will be in favor of the Government, who command a majority estimated at the present moment at from 10 to 5. After the struggle is over on Saturday the House will adjourn till Monday for the disposal of private members’ business, and on Tuesday the Government purpose to put uo supply, in order to take Sir George Grey’s two adverse motions relating to the Land Tax and of Land specially benefiting by railways. These will also be treated as motions of want of confidence, and after' them comes another adverse motion by Mr Montgomery regarding the Property Tax. The Estimates therefore are a long way off yet.
