BOROUGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
...Thajuual monthly meeting of the Ashbarton School Committee took place last evening, there being present Messrs St Will (in the chair), J. Ward, Sealy, W. Sparrow, E. Redd in, F. T. Mayo and G. W. Andrews., The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following, circular received from the Secretary of the Board of Education was then read “ The Chairman of the Ashburton, School Committee. —Sir, —I hiw'tHh 'honor/ by direction of the Board, to request that whenever your Committee have occasion .to recommend a teacher for appointment, they will, be good enough to.'fcjrward the names of all the applicants, and that they Will refrain hoy intimation to the teacher WOommeaded' until they are informed that tha .appointment' is . made by the B&'irtt. —I hut#,' etc. j J. Colbornb Vbel. ” —Received. MASTER'S REPORT. The master reported for the month ended the 6th inst. as follows :—“ The average attendance for the quarter ended 30th Jane was- 350’5, with a toll "of 490. Seventy pupils were admitted during the quarter and's9 Wete reported as left: In calculating the attendances for the quarter, I find 'that there are a few who come with extreme irregularity; I append a liat.elr names, (22) who seem to come to school vfhen they have nothing better to, do.' This irregularity does not belong to one week or month, but runs through their whole school course. Seventeen of these fall shoit'bf th£ requirements of the Education can ba. dealt with at yoarweMtliro.' 'As the holidays were not mefetioned'at your last meeting, the conns taken laatyear, namely - , that of closing for three weeks, commencing with the beginning of the quarter, as arranged at yoUr meeting In June, 1882. Mr Chichester, second master, obtained leave of absence from the Chairman during the last week in June through illness; he expects to be able to resume his duties on the opening of the school.” It was resolved —“ That the Committee deal with the matter of irregular attendants next month after the school has recommenced ; the master in the meantime to supply names, ages and standards of those complained of in the report.

VISITING COMMITTEE. Mr St Hill stated that he had, with the Chairman, attended at the school seVeral times during'the month, but there was nothing particular to report. The locks which required repairing would be attended to sometime during the holidays. Messrs E Reddin. and F. T. Mayo were appointed a Yisiting Committee for the month. The meeting then closed.

A Company has been floated for the purpose of securing a racecourse at island. Bay, about three miles out of Wellington At a meeting of shareholders on Monday afternoon, it was stated that a larger number of shares had been applied for than there was for allotment.
